2024 QBioS Award Winners
Congratulations to our QBioS award recipients for 2024! Winners were recognized at our Winter Party in December. QBioS Awards are 100% funded by Donations.
Best Paper in Cellular and Molecular Biosciences ($500)
Awarded to Christopher Zhang for “Constitutive expression of the Type VI
Secretion System carries no measurable fitness cost in Vibrio cholerae,”
https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/ece3.11081.
Best Paper in Organismal Behavior and Physiology ($500)
Awarded to Ethan Wold for “Moth resonant mechanics are tuned to wingbeat frequency and energetic demands,” https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rspb.2024.0317.
Best Paper in Ecology, Evolution and Population Biology ($500)
Awarded to Marian Dominguez Mirazo for “Accounting for Cellular-Level Variation in Lysis: Implications for Virus–Host Dynamics,” published in mBio, https://journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/mbio.01376-24.
Community Outreach and Service Award ($500 total for the group)
Awarded to the QBioS Student Government Association – Sayantan Datta, Ray Copeland, Alfie Brownless, Elisa Rheaume, and Luis Felipe Cedeno Perez. The Q-SGA organized coffee hours, pizza socials, fall lunches, QBioS fall share and QBioS orientation events. Their efforts resulted in camaraderie and inclusion for students from different research groups and fields of study.
This year, the award review committee selected only one award per person (paper or outreach/service). Although these two individuals were not awarded prize funds for outreach and service, the committee would like to acknowledge Marian Dominguez Mirazo and Chris Zhang for their service. Marian served on the organizing committee for the Women+ in Computational Biology mentorship program at Georgia Tech. Chris led the organizing effort for the inaugural Georgia Tech CMDI seminar day.
In addition to the recognition and the prize money, each winner will be invited to give a talk at the next QBioS Fall Share event in August 2025.
