2020 QBioS Student Awards

The Graduate Committee of the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Quantitative Biosciences is pleased to announce the winners of our 2020 QBioS student awards.

The Best Paper in Ecology and Evolution award goes to Rogelio Rodriguez Gonzales, for his paper “Quantitative Models of Phage-Antibiotic Combination Therapy”, published in mSystems. This recognition comes with a $500 award. 

The Distinguished Paper in Ecology and Evolution award goes to Danny Lauer and Rozenn Pineau for their paper “Plant biomes demonstrate that landscape resilience today is the lowest it has been since end-Pleistocene megafaunal extinctions”, published in Global Change Biology. This recognition comes with a $250 award to be split between the awardees.

The Best Paper in Organismal Behavior and Physiology award goes to Joy Putney for her paper “Precise timing is ubiquitous, consistent, and coordinated across a comprehensive, spike-resolved flight motor program”, published in PNAS. This recognition comes with a $500 award. 

The Distinguished Paper in Organismal Behavior and Physiology award goes to Lijiang Long for his paper “Automatic Classification of Cichlid Behaviors Using 3D Convolutional Residual Networks”, published in iScience. This recognition comes with a $250 award.

The QBioS Service Award goes to Andreea Magalie, for her work building community and institutions within QBioS. Andreea founded and leads the QBioS Student Government Association, and has started initiatives within QBioS that build community, highlight student accomplishments and improve student-advisor relationships. This recognition comes with a $375 award. 

The QBioS Community Outreach award goes to Pedro Márquez-Zácarias for his many outreach projects, including bilingual science journalism (hosted through his website biomusings.org), teaching at Freedom University (which serves undocumented individuals), disseminating multicellular outreach kits to schools, and organizing an international conference in the evolution of complex life. This recognition comes with a $375 award. 

In addition to the recognition and the prize money, each winner is invited to give a talk at the inaugural QBioS Days, to be held in Spring 2021.
